From the TMJ for art's sake school.

New Notes from the Underground:

Did you ever obsess over something (or someone, I suppose) until the obsessive thoughts and behavior just perpetuate themselves, the object of obsession entirely removed from the picture? When you stop to think about why you want the thing or why you like the person it becomes apparent that you don't even care anymore and that the state of obsessing, that determined focus on achieving an improbable goal, is the cancer that is driving you. And how do you stop it? You can't, for the goal no longer exists. There's no way to "achieve" anything. Are you doomed to the existential hamster wheel for the rest of your life?

I think this is where Buddhist meditation comes into the fray, am I correct?
