Comfortably Bummed

Okay, back to normal. Or so I'd like to think. I've decided that the only thing that will help me to move on from this fresh fiasco of an election would be a job at VH-1. Would there be anything sweeter, more anesthetizing than working on updates of "I Love the Eighties," sharing a soda with Loni Love during cuts, thrift shopping with Hal Sparks, sifting through hundreds of hours of twenty-year-old commercials looking for the perfect Strawberry Shortcake segment? Does VH-1 even show videos anymore? Who cares? I can't quit my fix of numbing nostalgia, and I might as well head straight to the source.

How are you all dealing with the aftermath? Are you a bitter, angry mess whose energy is so red hot that things break inexplicity around you except when you're watching VH-1? Or have you accepted the corrupt, broken organ that our democracy and media have been for the past twenty years or so? Or are you asking, "what election? Did you see the segment on Care Bears?" Care Bears, drool, sputter, urp.

The best thing for me is to pretend that this is Star Wars and I am part of the Rebel Alliance and someday, Return of the Jedi will come along and the good guys--with or without the assistance of furry little bears-- will win. I drink coffee out of my Rebel Alliance mug everyday to remind me.

These are dark times. I'm thinking that the only we can get rid of these people is to let them have their way for now. Once their backwards, 17th century schemes of eliminating abortion, gay rights, and taxes for anyone making over $100K a year move from divisive talk to actuality, then maybe enough people in this country will understand what's happening and sweep them out of office. I never thought I'd feel like this, but it seems we may have to destroy this country before it can be fixed.

The pendulum will swing back to the left. It always has. Right now the biggest threat to the right's stranglehold on power is themselves. The religious right has gotten smarter politically and isn't going to let the Republicans take them for granted. They're demanding more than lip service this time. Bush is going to have to give it to them and when he does the left will need to exploit the hell out of this political overreach. The moderates will abandon ship and help the Democrats back into power.

Unless of course there's a massive terrorist attack and then all bets are off. And being a pessimist I'm actually betting on an attack. Once we remove the sandpaper from Iraq, the terrorist flies will swarm back to the US. The thing I fear most is not the attack itself, it's the aftermath. I'm afraid this one won't unite us like last time, it'll divide us. And then all that crazy secession talk could become a reality and that won't be pretty. As much as red and blue hate each other, they need each other.

Do they really need each other? The red states live off the taxes of the blue states--I say let em pay for their damn roads themselves. The pendulum may swing back, agreed, but it may be too late. We're already blowing up tons of mosques in Falluja now that the pesky PR relations nightmare of the election is out of the way. There is not a good feeling in this country nowadays, between the fear of what this administration will do and the outright animosity of the two factions for each other. Can the media keep it under the lid? They're working overtime right now, but I suspect it'll break soon.

Everything sucks. So, I HAVE been watching a lot of VH-1, as luck would have it. There's a show called The Alternative (and what that really means showing punk/industrial/new wave/ska bands from the 80s, HA! So alternative!) But it's very nostalgic indeed. Tonight, they had the video for "Kool Thing," by Sonic Youth. Sonic Youth always reminds me of you, Jen, and I love that band but back in SMC, you loved it more, first. Who knew they made a video for Kool Thing? WHO KNEW? I sure as hell didn't.

I have also signed up for Netflix. So, yes, so far, that is pretty much the way I plan on spending the next four years, and continue to work on writing when I'm not drooling in front of the TV, catatonic.

Oh, and another possible good thing about the new regime: the possibility of very cool rebel music. Think of the Reagan years, there was some good music cranking at that time.

Yep, Care Bears.

The Alternative? When does it play? (Hopefully before my bedtime). Now that's a walk down nostalgia lane! I remember in high school setting the VCR on Sunday nights for 120 Minutes and then rushing home to see Siouxse and the Banshees, Front 242, Sonic Youth, the Gobetweens, and the Cure. Those were the days.

That's cool you signed up for Netflix--let me know whether you like it! I hear they're very progressive. The missus and I keep talking about cancelling our cable, but it's going to be hard to do with VH-1 and Comedy Central (for me) and TLC (for her).

Yep, you'll get the same kind of 120 Minutes-type fare with The Alternative. Do you guys get digital cable? It's on VH-1 Classic. I know for a fact it's on Sunday nights at 11pm, for 2 hours, then comes on other times of the week, like I think Wednesdays or Thursdays at 11pm, for 1 hour. And at some times during the day, but I forget the times. It's really cool... they do play a fair amount of Siouxsie and Creatures... it's a lot of fun and definitely a major head trip down memory lane.

So far, I am loving Netflix. It seems so far you can pretty much get anything, I've been going out on a limb and searching up obscure movies that I didn't think they'd have and they've had them. Stuff I watched when I was a teenager or whatever. Since I'm still on trial basis, I have only watched a few movies but I've only got 13 in my queue, but I'll let you know what I think the more I use it. Somehow I feel very liberated from being able to do it all from home.

So far I like it better because of the searchability and recommendations... and the fact that you're more likely to dig up the stuff you saw once and maybe want to see again. That never happened with Blockbuster, with me, somehow I seemed to mostly just get sucked into picking new releases and so missed all sorts of other stuff, or just plain forgot I wanted to see stuff.

We'll see..... I'm going to need lots of entertaining these days, I think.
