You know, I have a cousin in Atlanta, used to be the biggest slut ever and somehow now she's a super anti-abortionist and super mommy. How do people change so much? What is the attraction to these false "family values"? I mean, my cousin is only 25 and she has been in mommy mode since she was 18.

Well, the US has never been overtly liberal. Even in our periods of progressive ideas, we've always lagged behind the Europeans (and Canadians), regardless of what the history books say about us being the frontrunner of freedom and democracy. We're not that far from the communist witch hunts of the 50s, really, or the televanglism of the 80s. The 90s seem almost like a fluke. I remember graduating from college in 94 and thinking that there was no turning back; progressive issues were here to stay.
And a lot of them have stayed: organic foods, yoga, meditation, fuel-economical cars. Yes, they're all here to stay more because of their market value than their ideals, but at least they're here.
