Get connected

I've gotten alot of e-mails today, which has been nice for a Monday, especially a cold, dreary one. Someone also called, a client, and I took a few rings to answer it because I always forget where I put the phone. For the upteemth time, I was asked by the caller whether he/she had awoken me. This was after lunch, mind you. I don't know whether it's because I don't answer the phone on the first ring or because I probably sounded sleepy, but I'm guessing it's the latter. I hate talking on the phone, and I know it shows. Whenever I answer, it's with a strange combination of sleepiness, ennui, and suspision. No one I want to talk to ever calls me, with the exception of K, and I am terrible at talking on the phone. There's no visual cues from the other person, and I'm not as polished a speaker as I am writer. Everything about the phone fills me with dread, from making an appointment to calling a family member to wish them a happy birthday. I'm not a superfluous cell phone talker, either. Unless I've broken down on the road or am going to be late, I see no reason to call someone while I'm in the car, store, at someone's house, at a restaurant, in the middle of a movie, well, you get the picture.

I've read you should place the receiver on your left ear and not your right because then you can pick up emotional cues from the caller, so maybe I'll try that in the future. I should also condition myself to pretend it's Publisher's Sweepstakes Clearing House every time the phone rings. But then I'd just get filled with dread about what to do with all that money.

Easy, give it to me. I hate talking on the phone, too . . . and I dread it more and more with every passing year. Email is where it's at.

I don't mind talking on the phone at all. Then again, I don't get enough calls for it to become a burden, so maybe I have a higher tolerance.

What's this about left ear vs. right? Huh?

Left ear connects to right brain, I assume? Like the the left hand? I'll have to try that.

I don't mind talking on the phone. It probably goes back to my time on the radio. I even enjoy antagonizing telesales and survey people from time to time. When I'm in the mood, it turns into a little radio theatre.

David, can I have all my calls forwarded to your office? Would that make you or your spiders my secretary?

Jeff, how can you do it? My mom is a terrible phone listener, and I think it's planted a seed of fear in me over the years that no one cares what I have to say, so why bother?

Heb, yes! The ability to detect emotional cues is located in the right brain. I will have to think of the book on thinking I just saw that it. Unfortunately, I didn't read the chapter on memory.

i dunno...i guess i like talking. it does matter to whom, of course, but if it's someone i like, then i don't mind spending time on the phone. i'm good on the phone, i think. plus, i'm a big asshole.

ehh...i'm very skeptical of this left ear/right ear stuff. exclusive pathways to each hemisphere of the brain have proven to be somewhat of a fallacy. and even if there was this absolute link between the right side of our bodies to the left brain and vice versa, higher level fuctions like our emotions are dependent on the constant cooperation of both halves of the brain. that's not to say there isn't some amt of specialization in the two hemispheres, it's just not to such a great extent as was thought at one time.

my name is jeff, and i was a psychology undergrad.

I am in the phone clique. My biggest pet peeve is when people return my calls via email. I think, "What you don't want to talk to me?"

Obviously, I am overwhelmed with emails. There are about 300 emails from friends in my inbox since December and I can't answer them all. I wish we could go back to my high school days when we were on the phone for hours...

Jen, I'm in the anti-phone crowd. I can't stand the phone and it probably explains why I only speak to my biological father maybe twice a year. Hate, hate, hate the phone! My mom loves it which is a constant challenge. Caller ID has been a big help... and I am not only known to screen calls but also simply not answer sometimes, not because I hate the person, just because I hate talkiing on the freakin' phone. ;)

I think it's also that I, like you, communicate better in writing. Email is perfect for my personality... although I have to say, even that has gotten a bit overwhelming these days, I can't really properly keep up.
