Mothman, We Cometh

I'm about halfway through John Keel's The Mothman Prophecies, which details the peculiar incidents in 1967-68 of paranormal sitings in Point Pleasant, West Virginia, which ended quickly after the Silver Bridge collapsed into the Ohio river. Keel has some interesting theories, mainly that the UFO critters, Mothman, and demons all reside on a different plane next to ours and that they cross over once and awhile. Basically, UFO and paranormal sitings have spanned the course of history and have been attributed to different things based on fears of the times: witches, fairies, demons, vampires, UFOs. The strange thing about Point Pleasant was that these people were seeing spacehips and men in black as often as the Jews were seeing Jesus in the New Testament. Then, suddenly, bam! Nothing. Does anyone have sitings anymore? Was it one big subconscious hoax? How come no entities have crossed over recently and stirred shit up?

I have my own theory on that. My theory is that George W. Bush is the paranormal monstrosity that has been thrust upon us for this age; unfortunately, no one has figured out how to shove him back in the peanut can.

For more background, here's a site that revisits Point Pleasant. I was thinking that K and I haven't been on a ghost hunt in awhile. In the spring, I'd like to take a long weekend roadtrip to Point Pleasant and stir some shit up. Or at least take some pictures. If you're interested, leave me a comment or e-mail and bring your Geiger counter or stake.

Let me know when you go. I want a piece of that action.

Actually, Hebdomeros mentioned some guys in Leesburg who do a ghost tour -- and they are parapsychologists apparently and work with EVP. I think that would be an interesting tour to take.

The Leesburg tour is very cool. I'm a bit of a skeptic, and they had me believing by the end. They stand you out on the street at this spot where a ghost is frequently seen, and you put you hand in. They tell you that you might feel a slight tingle or chill, and I'll be damned if I didn't feel something. Just wish I could say what it was.

Mothman sounds fun. I'll have to look for a copy at my library. Looking at www.mothmanlives.com, it seems they have a big festival of sorts in September. Although that might not be the best time to go, if everyone in West Va. is there.

My husband is obsessed with Mothman, and we will certainly join you on any expedition.

The Mothman festival looks like fun, although you're right in that it would probably be hard to get a hotel room and such during the festival. A Spring--Summer trip sounds okay by me. The other ghost hunt sounds good as well. There are a few ghost "tours" here in Baltimore, namely the Fells Point one, but the stories are not very authehtic, at least according to some of the local bar owners.

I had some strange experiences/feelings on a tour of Woodlawn Plantation here in Alexandria. Although according to the lore, some people have had much more specific and scary supernatural experiences in that house.

They do a Halloween tour where they tell all the ghost stories in candlelight. Unlike most ghost tours, it's actually scary.

Ok, all the Mothman books disappeared off the library bookshelves when I went last night. The %$#!%&!! computer said they were in!

But I can take up to six days off work without my boss suspecting, as long as it doesn't fall on a holiday. I will be coming in April. Then you won't be able to get rid of me!

Hey, you come girl! There's Edgar Allen Poe and crabs (the eatin' kind) and funnel cake waiting for you!

I had to order the Mothman books.

And my boss asked me if he could take a vacation during our busiest time at the Museum, which I gave him permission provided I am allowed to have my six days off in April for Mothman. (I chickened out and asked for five days off...I may have said "four or five days.")

So now you will have an extra mouth to feed with this mysterious funnel cake of yours. It sounds like some form of Renaissance torture. You know the one where they keep dripping water into your mouth.

I'll have to reread Poe.

Where do I fly into?

See, now you're stuck with me.

Okay, we are on some kind of similar brainwave, because I was thinking & writing about Mothman at about the same time as when you posted this. I've seen the movie and read all the websites, but I haven't yet read Keel's book. That's next on the agenda. And we're definitely going on a road trip up there.
