A Pleasure to Do Business

I wanted to comment on this "blog comment" phenomenon because I find myself spending some part of almost every day commenting on other people's blogs. It kind of reminds me of the feedback universe on E-bay, which has a similar karmic energy fueling it. People obsess over getting and leaving feedback on E-bay because, if you have a thousand positive feedbacks, well, you're gold in the online commerce world. Similarly, if you spend time reading and commenting on the minute and obsessive details of other bloggers, chances are they'll attend to your minutae and obsessions. Your audience grows, their audience grows, backs are scratched, the blogger Gods are happy. The only difference is that blog commenting is much more interesting than reading "A+++++ FAST SHIPPING A PLEASURE 2 DO BIZNESS." Of course, when our blog comments evolve into the same illerate shorthand, the shark has been jumped, I suppose.

Wouldn't it be great if some sort of hybrid evolved from the fusion of two dying entities, the blog and the auction? We could comment on other people's auctions:

Why are you selling a slightly used Ewok toothbrush? Have you no shame?

or

You really expect me to believe Liberace used this toothpick?

or the kiss of death:

If you don't sell me this item for 0.05, I'm leaving you really, really nasty feedback

FIRST ONE TO COMMENT...POW!

I was thinking about this recently. I used to keep my bullshit thoughts on LiveJournal and received many more comments there than I do now that I have my own site/blog. In fact, you are one of the few kind souls who regularly comments on my blog. (Cha-ching!)

It definitely has something to do with this kind of give and take. On LJ, many of the people who read my blog had LiveJournals of their own. The majority of them were also friends in real life. So, when it came to commenting, there was this high-visiblity thing going on. It's like their motives for commenting on whatever random crap I was talking about were heavily influenced by the fact that there was this known audience for them. They knew that this certain set of people would be reading them.

It's much different now. These same friends, many of whom know I have my own site with a blog everything never comment. They certainly read it; they just don't participate. Why? Because there's no payoff, since it's not guaranteed that anyone else they know will even read it. Their backs, as you put it, aren't being scratched.

But anyway, I just wanted to say this post gets an A and more plusses than my computer can store.

PS: I'll be posting sometime in the near future and could sure use one of your comments. And what's with all the oral hygiene items on your blauction site of the future? Will there be a shortage of toothcare items after WWIII?!

Yeah, it strikes me as an odd phenomenon indeed. I've already seen the examples of "blog spam," which is annoying, where someone just comes and says, "Nice blog" and that's it. Ick.

I'm really enjoying it though. There are some solid people here blogging and I love that. People I wouldn't have met or known about otherwise. I am really glad I'm doing it... and when it comes to my whole writing schtick, it's so nice to have people who are supporter and can commiserate. Sometimes my regular friends don't really get what goes into writing fiction and how tough it can be.

There is an odd commodification of blogging that I see sometimes. Kind of an "I'll post on your blog if you post on mine" attitude. Kind of silly. I'd rather have a few people looking in on my blog who actually enjoy it in some way than people using it as a place to spout off on their own. But that's me.

Oh, and A++++++++++++++++++++Would read this blog again.

Kind of on the topic: I've had at least two people send me emails that, if I link to them, they will link to me. One was a gun-loving rightwing nut (!) and the other was an escort from NY. The escort was pretty nice and she even gave me some love advice. But I turned down her offer.

I try to read everyone I link to weekly but I can't comment everywhere. I also don't know what to comment sometimes. I can't even come up with comments for the people I read every day (guess who?).

I have got to say that I love reading my comments and seeing all these strange little conversations take place, especially if they're not just between me & the commenter, but also between the commenters themselves.

That said, I agree with Litblitz. I've met people who share some of my more obscure interests. I've also met a few fellow bloggers in person. It's not a high school thing where you need to have a million friends, none of them nerds.

I do have to say, though, that I was tickled pink when I was picked as one of those "cool sites of the day" and I got five hundred visitors in one day; I just hope some of them come back and we form a meaningful relationship. ;)

Maktaaq, cool site of the day! That's so awesome!!!

Yeah, the commoditization of blogs is definitely a phenomenon. I definitely have my people who I comment on just about every day, but I think that has to do with having similar interests and having something to say. I think the people who are very bad about the commoditization aspect are the ones who won't be blogging anymore in another 2 months. After all, it's been so hyped up for the last six months or so.

I guess it's odd, though, it's become part of my sort of OCD ritual; I'll write a blog post, and then go visit my regular blog destinations and comment on theirs. It's definitely becoming part of that whole "I'll check my email/Log onto AIM" type habit. I suppose more sunlight and fresh air might be nice... ;)

Sorry I haven't commented on this--I actually did something very unprecedented yesterday: instead of being snowed in at the computer, we decided to clean the basement! Cleaning gives one quite a sense of acomplishment, I say: cleanliness is godliness. Or something.

Anyway, I guess I have my own personal take on the commenting thing--I work from home and have little contact outside of my clients (and that thru e-mail). I feel weird about e-mail my friends at work a lot--don't want them to get flack. Therefore, commenting on people's blogs lets me keep in touch with people on their time. It also makes me feel as if I have a little virtual break room each day, which after the sound of Maggie snoring for three hours, is woefully needed.

Wow, I'm so impressed. Cleaning is one of the things hanging over my head this weekend... I know I should have taken the opportunity to do it, but I didn't. I really have gotten little constructive done at all.

Ah yes, blogs: the virtual coffee shops!
